Boy Scout Acronyms

 

APL - Assistant Patrol Leader - Youth second leader of a patrol. Appointed by the Patrol Leader to help him and take his place in his absence.

 

ASM - Assistant Scoutmaster - A commissioned volunteer, 18 or older, appointed by the chartered organization, who helps the SM administer the troop program.

 

ASPL - Assistant Senior Patrol Leader - Appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader with the Scout Master's advice and consent. He helps to run the troop with the Senior Patrol Leader and the Patrol Leaders Council.

 

BSA - Boy Scouts of America - Nationally chartered organization that encompasses Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorer Units, and Varsity Units. Its purpose is character building and citizenship training.

 

BOR - Board of Review - A review held to determine if a Boy Scout has satisfactorily completed rank advancement requirements. May also be held as an incentive for Scouts not advancing. For first 5 ranks, the board of review is held by the troop committee, for the Eagle Scout rank, the council decides whether district or council advancement committee is responsible.

 

CC - Committee Chair - The adult leader of the troop committee, may also be a member of the chartered organization. Provides the motivation and direction to the committee to get the Troop Program implemented, as decided by the Patrol Leaders Council.

 

CO - Chartered Organization - A religious, civic, fraternal, educational, or other community-based organization that has applied for and received a charter to operate a Boy Scouts of America scouting unit.

 

COH - Court of Honor - A ceremony to honor and recognize Scouts for their achievements and rank advancements. A special Court of Honor is used when a Scout reaches Eagle.

 

COR - Chartered Organization Representative - The direct contact between the troop and the chartered organization.

 

DE - District Executive - A professional Scouter who works under the direction of the Scout Executive and is responsible for the achievements of the district.

 

FOS - Friends of Scouting - Annual fundraiser for the council. Money is donated from businesses and individuals and is used for such things as subsidizing scout camps and activities.

 

JASM - Junior Assistant Scoutmaster - The Junior Assistant Scoutmaster serves in the capacity of an assistant Scoutmaster except where legal age and maturity are required. He must be at least 16 years old and not yet 18. He's appointed by the Scoutmaster because of his leadership ability.

 

HH - Hills and Hollows - Scout Ranch in south Denton.

 

LHC - Longhorn Council - Large scouting organizational area extending from Gainsville to Killeen and from Palo Pinto to Buffalo. Includes Fort Worth, Denton and Waco.

 

MB - Merit Badge - Badges which are earned by scouts to help them learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers. 

 

MBC - Merit Badge College - Event dedicated to give Boy Scouts the opportunity to earn Merit Badges.

 

MC - Member of the Committee - Adult volunteer who serves on the committee which carries out the unit program . Members are involved in operation of the unit as in finance, advancement, transportation, fund raising, and other duties.

 

NESA - National Eagles Scout Association - A fellowship of men who have achieved the Eagle Scout rank and who desire using their efforts and influence toward forming the kind of young men America needs for leadership.

 

NOAC - National Order of the Arrow Conference - A biennial gathering of Order of the Arrow members, usually in a Mid-western University, for training and fellowship.

 

NYLT - National Youth Leadership Training - Training course for youth leaders designed to develop the scouts leadership techniques using the patrol method and rotating leadership responsibility.

 

OA - Order of the Arrow - Group made up of scouts elected by their peers whose main purposes are to develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit, to promote Scout camping and to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

 

PL - Patrol Leader - Youth leader of a patrol usually consisting of between 5-8 other boys. As a member of the Patrol Leaders Council,  he helps make the decisions that run the troop. He appoints his Assistant Patrol Leader..

 

PQ - Patrol Quartermaster - Youth leader responsible for keeping records of patrol equipment and keep patrol equipment in good order.

 

PS - Patrol Scribe - Youth leader responsible for attendance and to keep a log of patrol meetings, maintaining patrol attendance and records and recording dues payments and give to troop scribe.

 

PLC - Patrol Leaders Conference - The youth leaders of a troop. The Patrol Leaders Council consists of the Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leaders, Assistant Patrol Leaders. They should be trained by the Scout Master, through Troop Junior Leadership Training, to do the planning and running of the troop.

 

PTC - Philmont Training Center - A center at Philmont Scout Ranch that hosts training seminars for selected Scouts and Scouters on topics ranging from Key-3's,to OA Advisers, to program leader training, to Commissioner training, etc. Attendance is by invitation upon local council nomination.

 

QM - Quartermaster - This youth leader is responsible for the food and equipment of the troop for campouts and activities.

 

SM - Scoutmaster - Adult leader head of the troop. A commissioned volunteer, 21 or over, appointed by the chartered organization. Provides direction and training to the Scouts so they can run a troop more effectively. Works with the troop committee and the chartered organization representative to provide program opportunities and direction.

 

SMC - Scoutmasters Conference - A meeting between the Scout and a Scoutmaster. They can come in two forms, first of which is to review progress of rank advancement, to test their proficiency and knowledge of the requirements needed for the rank applying for and also previous ranks, and to have a general conversation about how they feel things are going in the Troop. The second form of a SMC comes in when a SM, parent or the Scout is having problems and needs some help, guidance or direction. They are meant to be a positive meeting not a disciplinary meeting, but more so to understand what the problems or issues are and to jointly come to a resolution to solve them. 

 

SPL - Senior Patrol Leader - Youth Leader of the troop. He is elected by the members of the troop and is the head of the Patrol Leaders Council. He appoints his Assistant Senior Patrol Leader..

 

SR2 - Sid Richardson - Scout Ranch in the Longhorn Council on Lake Bridgeport.

 

TA - Twin Arrows - General name for event for youth leadership training.

 

TC - Troop Committee - A group of adult volunteers led by the Committee Chair to get the troop program implemented, as decided by the Patrol Leaders Council.

 

TG - Troop Guide - A youth leader who works with the new scout patrols to teach them skills for rank advancement.

 

WR - Worth Ranch - Scout Ranch in the Longhorn Council near Palo Pinto.

 

YPP - Youth Protection Plan - Guidelines and policies which help fight child abuse. This Boy Scouts of America puts emphasis on fighting child abuse by teaching youth the "three R's": Recognize, Resist, and Report child abuse; by helping parents and Scouters learn to recognize indicators of child abuse; and by teaching them how to handle child abuse situations.
